Why do we have bail them out?

can anyone tell me what would or could happen it Leman Bros, Aig, or any of these other companys fail. I dont really want to pay for the people who put their money in risky investments when i have always kept my in safe cd's. does anyone REALLY know what would happen if we just let them shut down...???
